NLP and Spontaneous Language:  Leelo is now spontaneously using some language he has been practicing in discrete trial, such as “my turn”.  Therapists and parents are prompting a broad range of parts of speech, and vocabulary.  And- Leelo is occassionally using the pronoun “I” .

P= prompted (model)              S = spontaneous (if Leelo repeats a phrase used earlier in the session, it is considered spontaneous)

Spontaneous language:

(s) I got it                                                    (s) you’re nine

(s) eeny meeny miny mo                              (s) I all done

(s) where’s letters?                                       (s) one two three four

(s) where are you?                                       (s) that’s right

(s) what is it?                                               (s) papa’s in a pail

 (s) sky is blue                                             (s) up in the sky

Squid: Are you going poo poo?  Leelo: I going poo poo.

(s) lets go to bed. daddy bed.

(s) yay - Totoro!

(s) I want video to be all done

Requests:

(s) squish me

(s)     I want yellow star

(s) open the toys

(s) I want three and four

(s) give me milk

(s) I want number 5

Therapist L: DO YOU WANT BLUE OR RED? Leelo: “I WANT MOMMY!”

NLP:

(s) 3 goes here                                            (p) it’s a bob book

(s) 3 is beautiful                                           (s)look at all balloons

(p)I see lofty                                                (p) nine balloons flying

(p) good afternoon Bob                                 (p)he’s cutting hair

General Note: Lately Leelo has been very attached to Squid, and can be a bit distressed when she leaves for him to start therapy.  To support him, we are having Squid join him in therapy for about ˝ hour in the middle of the session, doing NLP,games and activities. We hope this will also help Leelo get used to remaining focused on therapy when Squid is nearby.

In order to facilitate generalization, or Leelo’s use of skills in contexts other than discrete trial, we are emphasizing practice “in context”.  Depending on the skill, this may mean sitting on the floor/outside, or some other location while working, practicing with a variety of materials and/or people, practicing while in the middle of something else, etc.
