Leelo’s Team Meeting MINUTES: 10/4/04

Leelo began our meeting by grabbing me and Therapist L by the hand and telling us to come downstairs- he wanted us to see how his parents’ room (aka: Leelo’s room J) was rearranged.  Very exciting communication- and of course, the room looks fantastic.

A.     Iron Gate: Leelo continues to enjoy preschool, and is using his skills more and more.  Therapist F shared:

·        Leelo is participating for increasing time during circle, and even stayed for the dance, all songs, and part of the story when he sat with Squid.

·        Therapist F is using a minischedule during circle to help him to know what comes next, and to participate for longer.

·        Leelo is appropriately requesting to be “all done” when he is finished with circle (Therapist F and Squid encourage him to stay a bit more when Leelo seems able to sit for longer)

·        Therapist F uses massage to help Leelo to calm down, engage in activities, and also immediately prior to circle time

·        Leelo is already following simple routines with some independence (e.g. on arrival: getting name tag, having teacher pin it on him, and greeting teacher)

·        As Leelo learns routines, Therapist F will fade out prompts (reduce words, pair with physical and then fade, etc) to further increase Leelo’s independence

·        Peers are spontaneously playing and observing Leelo  (Tarren, Mayan, Spencen, Andren); Therapist F is collecting photos of peers so Leelo can learn their names

·        Other parents are working directly with Leelo, by greeting him and directing him.

·        Leelo is stepping on other children’s block constructions; we will continue working with him on “walk around” in discrete trial, and also in play group.  Therapist F will try a simple social story with photos and short phrases.

·        Leelo is eating and drinking at snack time, and is getting the hang of putting his cup on the tray and the napkin on the trash.

B.    Data and Instructional Procedures:

1.      Toileting:

·        Use most potent reinforcers (donuts, cookie, new toys); offer choice or alternate frequently- at least after 3 days; write reinforcer on data sheet

·        wet/dry instruction: Leelo clearly knows wet and dry for towels, other materials; sense of wet and dry underpants is emerging;  it is not clear if Leelo knows when he is peeing/pooing.  During dry checks, have Leelo look down,  touch underpants, say “I am wet” or “I am dry”.  Reinforce for labeling correctly wet/dry.  Also, practice wet and dry with underpants on baby doll (reinforce for correct labeling).

·        Massage to relax while sitting on potty

·        After Leelo pees, reinforce w/ favorites, then prompt “pee more” to help him try to fully empty his bladder. Encourage by showing reinforcers (e.g. “Pee more, then donuts”, etc)

·        Try for 2 hours of toilet training at a time

2.      Sensory:

Massage is helping Leelo to calm down; hard to capture on paper. Stop sensory data collection- Supervisor M will take other observational data before, during, and after sensory activities.

Trampoline impressions- Leelo loves trampoline, but does not appear to calm/focus him or reduce vocalizations or other problem behaviors.  Use trampoline as reinforcer, and for vigorous activity

Singing: begin singing to relax Leelo every hour.  Favorite songs: Bingo, and 5 Little Ducks

Body sock: use with Leelo as he requests it.

C.    Reinforcement:  Leelo’s interests continue to change within sessions; continue mini reinforcement assessments (every hour or so) to check which toys, foods he is motivated for.  Use small pieces of the most potent for toileting (donuts, other sweet treats)

·        Leelo continues to enjoy observing the other children playing.

D.    Play Group: The dynamic with Iz and Danielle is difficult; We discussed how they participate at the end of a long school day, and are both probably hungry and tired of structure being imposed on them; both girls like to “be in charge”; they do a wonderful job at NLP, although they claim they don’t want to do it.  We will try:

·        Breaking in the middle of group for a snack for everyone

·        Playing a game for Leelo to practice following directions called “I’m the boss”.

E.    Helping Leelo to prepare for the baby: We will begin our next team meeting with this topic.

F.     Scheduling:

·        Next Meeting:   Mon 10/18/04 at 12:30

·        Leelo has therapy and school on Oct 11 (“Columbus day”)
