Leelo’s Team Meeting Minutes: 3/29/04

1               Data and Instructional Procedures:

·        Play: Everyone agreed that Leelo’s spontaneous play is “taking off”.  Squid shared that Leelo appropriately rolls trains on tracks at other children’s homes, toy stores, and has also been playing nicely with Mr Potato Head, and blocks;  Therapist T saw Leelo do 2 spontaneous steps with birthday party theme toys; Therapist L saw Leelo doing 2 steps with doll and another object.   This is WONDERFUL!!!  We will continue practicing component play skills in DTT setting, as well as sequenced skills in more natural contexts and play group.  Also, Squid will encourage family and friends to play with Leelo with these toys (trains, blocks, Mr. Potato Head, doll, birthday party stuff), to provide lots of opportunities for Leelo’s generalized use of his skills.

·        Greetings: Leelo ocassionally continues to echo “Hi Leelo”.  Keep on practicing both “hi” and “Hi Leelo” in DTT and in context.  Try using puppets/dolls (he seems focused and will self-correct with these).  When Leelo echos, try to interrupt him- prompt the correct “Hi Therapist L”.  If Leelo echoing frequently that session, drop the “Hi Leelo” and just do “hi” for that day. (he seems to echo more on some days, such as when he has a cold...) In play group, play games including Hello songs, photo games, etc to provide opportunities to greet by name. (Supervisor M will share hello songs with Therapist L)

·        Where: Going fine; continue as indicated in binder

·        NLP/Spontaneous Language: NLP 4 words- Leelo has really moved quickly in NLP and is doing nicely with 4 words. Therapist T and Therapist L gave examples of Leelo’s spontaneous use of 2 sentences strung together!!.  (“Open door.  I want to go outside”).

·        Pre-toileting: We have begun to teach the concepts Wet and Dry.  Toileting will begin at the end of April/beginning of May.  We will start by taking a baseline of how often Leelo urinates.  Then we will increase fluids, and spend lots of time practicing using the toilet, with careful scheduling sot that Leelo will be at the right place at the right time!  (and of course, there will be lots of rewards and celebrations.) Squid has the big boy underpants ready.

·        Maintenance: Therapist T raised the importance of moving trials to the floor and other more naturalistic settings;  Supervisor M will add ideas to the maintenance data sheet for practicing mastered tasks in a variety of more naturalistic ways.  Also, Squid will share ideas with friends and family for generalized practice on a few tasks.  Skills to start with: Body parts (tickle sessions with grandparents, while reading stories/playing with dolls, etc) and pretending  with toys (trains, birthday party, etc). And- as always, spontaneous requests, other language as the context demands.

2               Reinforcement and Breaks: The room is generally cleared now, and this seems to be helping Leelo and his playmates to focus better on what they are doing.  Leelo is confused by having to chose his toys before break.  Therapist L has success having him chose toys from the basket.  Try putting up to 6 choices in the basket before your session, and having Leelo chose prior to break.

3               Play group update: Therapist L shared her play group structures for both groups.

·        The playmates are having success with a visual schedule/checklist, using words and pictures.  We will increase the size, visuals, other features to make the schedule more accessible to Leelo, and will start to teach him about using a visual schedule/checklist in a one to one setting.

·        Therapist L will be introducing language games that help Leelo to take a turn in a group, and to listen to other children.  To get him ready, lets practice, in NLP, having Leelo make statements about what he is holding e.g. “I have a book”, “I have a sticker”, etc.

·        We all agreed on the need to keep the reinforcements fresh.  Right now sticker books are in.  In the future, we will have the girls (and Leelo, as much as possible) assist in making the schedule, chosing the games to play; other ideas include Tshirts, buttons, naming the club, etc.

4               Scheduling: Leelo is away on Spring break April 5 to 9.  Supervisor M away week of April 19-23.  Andil will visit on Monday April 19.

Thanks everyone for such a focused, informative meeting.
